Rugby World Cup Lotteries Fund

Public events as part of next year's nationwide Rugby World Cup festival will be supported by a new $9.5 million lotteries fund, Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully and Internal Affairs Minister Nathan Guy announced in July.

"During Rugby World Cup 2011 we will be staging a nationwide festival which will showcase the best of New Zealand's arts, food and wine, heritage, entertainment, experiences, and lifestyle," Mr McCully said. "The New Zealand 2011 Festival Lottery Fund will support all sorts of community events associated with the festival. This could include everything from concerts, fairs, and exhibitions, to street markets and parades."

Funding can go towards management and operating costs, artists' fees, publicity, and production costs. The fund will be administered by the Department of Internal Affairs. Recruitment for 5000 volunteers for Rugby World Cup 2011 is kicking off with public forums being held in Auckland in early July. Download the invitation.

About 1500 volunteers will be needed in Auckland in a variety of roles both within stadiums and outside at hotels, Fan Zones and transport hubs.

Volunteers will play a crucial part in the Tournament’s success, and you could be just who we’re after.

Respecting Commercial Rights surrounding RWC - Major Events Management Act 2007 (MEMA).

RWC 2011 has been declared a ‘major event’ under the Major Events Management Act, prohibiting ambush marketing, ticket scalping and unauthorised associations, and protecting words and emblems connected to the Tournament.

New Zealanders and New Zealand businesses will have many opportunities to be part of the Rugby World Cup 2011 celebrations and activities. It is however important for all business to be mindful of the MEMA, what it is, what it means and what implications it has for business activities (such as advertising and promotions). MEMA protects the rights of official sponsors to benefit from their significant investment in RWC2011. It does this by preventing parties that are not official sponsors from advertising, or otherwise promoting their good or services, in a manner that suggests they are official sponsors or somehow associated with RWC 2011 when they are not.

Specific RWC2011 emblems and words have been protected under the MEMA and includes the use of the following worlds: Rugby World Cup; World Cup 2011; RWC; World in Union; Rugby New Zealand 2011; Total Rugby, Web Ellis Cup, IRB.

MEMA Practical Example: Accommodation Provider

A  hotel or B+B which advertised on its website or brochures “SPECIAL Rugby World Cup packages available now” would be in breach of  MEMA because it is using protected RWC 2011 emblems and worlds and creating an association to the event. An alternative option, which would be acceptable would be “Vacancies still available during September and October 2011”.
